FedEx Express' Lumpkin Takes Grand Championship at 2019 RITDC

FedEx Express' David Lumpkin of Ashaway took first place in the Straight Truck Class and earned Grand Champion Honors in the 2019 Rhode Island Truck Driving Championship.  Kyle Smith of A. Duie Pyle earned honors as Rookie of the Year as the top points earner for a first-time participant.

The event took place Saturday, June 1, 2019 at the NETTTS Pawtucket campus.  Twenty nine professional drivers, up from 2018's competing class of eighteen, from ten companies competed in six truck classes: Step-Van, Straight Truck, 3-Axle Tractor Trailer, 4-Axle T/T 5-Axle T/T and Twin Trailers.  Drivers compiled points in three areas - written test; pre-inspection administered by the Rhode Island State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit; and driving skills - which contributed to a combined score.  Participants must be accident-free and continuously employed by the same company for one year prior to the TDC to be eligible to compete.

Lumpkin had taken first place in his truck class in five prior Rhode Island Truck Driving Championships but this is his first Grand Championship.

Lumpkin and the 2019 winners of each truck class will go on to compete at the American Trucking Associations' National Truck Driving Championships August 14-17 in Pittsburgh, PA.  RITA congratulates all drivers for participating.
